outlook + google calendar + wing sync

May 27th, 2007

i finally got around to setting up a sync between google calendar and outlook using remote calendars. it’s a fairly straight forward install, check this howto for more info. the only wierd issue i’m having is that i had 2 seperate calendars on google and it would spew out a wierd error when it goes to update the second calendar. the easiest way to fix that was just to go to google calendars and merge my second calendar into my first one. not the most elegant solution, but i really just wanted this to work and i can mess with it later.

oh, and if you’re curious, it’s a TRUE sync between outlook and google calendars, not just a one way sync. so if you update on the wing, it will sync with outlook, then update google calendars when it syncs. sweet.

alternate gps, navizon

May 27th, 2007

instead of having to buy a bluetooth gps brick to carry along with a cell phone/pocket pc, you could always just use navizon. navizon is peer to peer wireless transitioning, where you use cell phone towers and wifi access points to determine your location. instead of having to reach a gps satellite, all you need to is be within access of a cell tower or wifi point.

well, that’s the idea anyhow. i just loaded it up on the wing, and it shows that i am in fairfax virginia, but it’s off by a few miles. as navizon maps more cell phone towers and wifi access points, the locator will work even better. if you use your pocket pc with a gps unit, and help navizon map out the towers and access points, they’ll even pay you.

if you don’t have bluetooth gps, you can always purchase navizon’s virtual gps for $24.99. and the virtual gps can also be used to feed gps data into other programs, i.e. google maps. i’m playing around with the free 15-day trial, so far it’s pretty neat. i’m too lazy to go run down the street to see how many wifi access points i can find. i’ll just check navizon tommorrow to see how many towers and access points i’ve added.
here’s a wired article about navizon, and there’s also a navizon blog.

word documents in safe mode?

May 25th, 2007

a friend was having issues with a new laptop where word was openning the documents in safe mode. personally i had no clue that there was a safe mode for word, but there really is such a beast. if you’re having issues, check out this link. looks like the fix is to update word itself, and the problem seems to appear after installing acrobat 7. so install the latest service pack and hopefully it’ll fix it.
