mythtv frontends + seperate media network

December 12th, 2007

i’m trying to find a smaller stb (set top box) to run mythtv. the mythtv wiki has a pretty good comparison of current mythtv frontend options… i’m going to have to sit down and look at the pros/cons of each. i’m planning on rolling up atleast 2 more mythtv frontends and i really want the smallest/quietest setup i can get.

i also need to figure out what to do about setting up a seperate network for all the media traffic that i’ll have between the frontends and backends, wifi just won’t cut it and i really don’t feel like running cat5 through my walls. linksys has some new powerline networking boxes that can supposedly pump up to 200mb over your existing internal power lines. i also have some spare coax running through the walls, i wonder what the current state of bnc networking is? i’m gonna feel silly if i use a 10base-2 network though. i remember trying to debug 10base-2 lans back when i used to go to lan parties (yeah… that long ago) then again, 10mb/s isn’t any improvement over 802.11g wireless.
