muahahah! after making FEBEzip & FEBEunzip executable, i was able to export my profile from ubuntu and import it into osx. woot! that beats having to install everything by hand. [febe 5.2.2 here]
after looking at the mythtv wiki for mac osx, it seems like it would just be easier to roll up a small virtualized mythbuntu frontend instead of installing all the development libraries and configuring a myth environment. or i should just go order a mediamvp instead and see how an $80 mythtv frontend works.
have an avi you want to convert to a (s)vcd? use osx? you need ffmpegX.

from their webpage

it takes a while on my ibook g4, but hey it works. it’s also nag-ware/shareware, but it’s not like it’s painful to pony up the $15 donation they ask for. if you need to go the other way and covert a dvd to mpeg-4, check out handbrake. gotta love well packaged tools that just get the job done.
